What an inline actuator is

An inline actuator is a tubular electric linear actuator with the motor, gearbox and screw arranged on one axis, rather than the motor folded beside the tube. The result is a slim cylinder that fits where width is limited. Most are low-voltage DC units with a brushed motor and planetary gearbox driving a lead or ball screw, with built-in limit switches and optional position feedback. The diameter is small for the force, though the overall length is greater than a parallel-motor design.

When engineers choose an inline actuator

Choose an inline actuator when the installation is narrow, such as inside a profile, tube, column or furniture frame, or where a neat cylindrical form is wanted. The trade-off is length: putting motor, gearbox and screw in a row makes the retracted length longer for the same stroke. If length is the tighter constraint, a parallel or right-angle layout is shorter. Duty and precision are similar to other compact DC actuators.

How to specify the LA In-line Linear Actuators

Send these with your enquiry and an engineer can confirm the right LA In-line Linear Actuators variant:

  • Body diameter limit (mm)
  • Stroke and retracted length (mm)
  • Force, push and pull (N)
  • Speed under load (mm/s)
  • Supply voltage (V DC) and current (A)
  • Feedback and limit switch requirements
  • Ingress protection (IP code)

Common mistakes to avoid

  • Checking stroke but not the retracted length, which is larger for inline units
  • Using pivot mounts that let the slim body bend under side load
  • Exceeding the intermittent duty rating
  • Forgetting cable exit direction in a tight tube

LA In-line Linear Actuators: frequently asked questions

Can you help replace LA In-line Linear Actuators or source the original?

Send the full model code, quantity and required date. Our engineers can check original-part availability and assess suitable alternatives, including supply-network options where appropriate. We confirm compatibility and any changes needed before recommending a replacement.

What is the LA In-line Linear Actuators?

Slim tubular 12/24 VDC actuators with the brushed motor and planetary gearbox in line with the tube, in diameters 16-55 mm, for pergolas, marine, medical and building automation. Published series figures include temperature -5 °C, temperature 40 °C, force 6,000 N, stroke 1,000 mm. It is available through our supply network, and our engineers can confirm the right variant for your application.

What model codes are in the LA In-line Linear Actuators range?

The LA In-line Linear Actuators range includes LA16Z, LA26M, LA35M, LA38M, LA38MP, LA45M, LA52M. The table on this page lists each published model code with its key figures. Send us the code you use, or the one you need to replace, and our engineers will confirm availability, lead time or the closest equivalent.

Who makes the LA In-line Linear Actuators?

The LA In-line Linear Actuators is part of a range available through our supply network. Send us your requirement for pricing, lead time, datasheets and CAD.

What is the temperature of the LA In-line Linear Actuators?

The published series minimum temperature is -5 °C. Individual models and sizes in the LA In-line Linear Actuators range vary, so check the exact variant against your duty cycle, mounting and environment, or ask our engineers to confirm the right size for you.

What is the difference between an inline and a parallel actuator?

In an inline actuator, the motor sits on the same axis as the screw, giving a slim tube that is longer overall. In a parallel or folded actuator, the motor sits beside the screw, connected through gears or a belt, giving a shorter but wider unit. Choose by which dimension is more constrained in the installation.

Are inline actuators suitable for outdoor use?

Many are, with sealing commonly to IP65 or higher, which suits shading systems, marine fittings and outdoor equipment. Check the IP code, temperature range, UV resistance of the cable and whether the rod seal resists dirt and salt. Condensation inside the tube can still occur, so allow drainage or venting if needed.
