Who FAULHABER is
FAULHABER is a German manufacturer of miniature and micro drive systems, based in Schönaich, south-west of Stuttgart. It says it offers the most extensive range of small drive systems available from a single source worldwide: ironless DC micromotors, brushless and linear servomotors, precision gearheads and motion controllers. Its drives are chosen where space, weight and power consumption are tight and the motor still has to run precisely. FAULHABER is a trademark of its owner.
History and ownership
The company was founded as Dr. Fritz Faulhaber GmbH near Stuttgart in 1947. The company credits the invention of Dr. Fritz Faulhaber with being a milestone in precision mechanics that opened up new applications for small electric motors, and its history records a 1958 patent registration (DE1188709) for an electric micromotor.
International expansion began early: MicroMo Electronics Inc. was founded in Cleveland, Ohio, in 1961, and Minimotor SA in Agno, Switzerland, in 1962. Both later joined the group, Minimotor through acquisition in 2008 and MicroMo in 2019, when it was integrated as FAULHABER MICROMO LLC. Other acquisitions include Feintechnik Bertsch (1999), Precistep (2000), Rolla Microgear (2007) and PDT Präzisionsdrehteile (2014). MPS Micro Precision Systems AG was founded in 2003, and in 2023 the four Swiss subsidiaries were merged to form FAULHABER SA. Sales companies have opened across Europe and Asia since 2006, most recently in Denmark (2024) and India (2025).
Today the FAULHABER GROUP has two divisions: FAULHABER Drive Systems, headquartered in Germany, and Micro Precision Systems (MPS) in Switzerland. The parent company, Dr. Fritz Faulhaber GmbH & Co. KG, is a limited partnership with Dr. Fritz Faulhaber Verwaltungs-GmbH as general partner, and is not publicly listed.
Product portfolio
Brushed DC micromotors
The SR series uses ironless skew-wound coils with precious-metal commutation and rare-earth magnets for low-current, battery-friendly drives. The CR series uses graphite commutation for higher current and start-stop duty, and the CXR series is a cost-optimised graphite-commutated range in mid-range diameters.
Brushless and linear servomotors
The four-pole BX4 brushless servomotors come in 22 mm and 32 mm sizes, with optional built-in speed or motion controller electronics. The BP4 is built for maximum power density and dynamics in the same diameters, and the BXT is a flat outer-rotor motor with a high torque-to-length ratio. The LM linear DC-servomotors are tubular motors with a moving magnetic rod for direct short-stroke linear motion. Our servo vs stepper guide and motor hub explain where these fit.
Gearheads and motion controllers
The GPT planetary gearheads are an all-metal family from 14 mm to 42 mm with very fine ratio steps and high-torque and low-noise versions. The MC motion controllers are compact single-axis controllers for FAULHABER DC, brushless and linear motors, from PCB-mounted modules to housed units with CANopen and EtherCAT.
Technologies and standards
The ironless skew-wound winding is FAULHABER’s core technology. Because the rotor has no iron, there is no cogging torque, low rotor inertia and low current draw, which gives smooth control at low speed and long battery life. Precious-metal commutation suits low-current continuous duty, while graphite commutation handles higher current and frequent starts. Motion controllers with CANopen and EtherCAT connect the drives to standard machine networks.
Industries served
FAULHABER presents its range by technology rather than by sector. In engineering terms, the products suit any design where a small, efficient drive must position or meter precisely from a limited power budget, for example battery-powered handheld equipment, compact grippers and small dosing or positioning axes. MPS adds miniature bearing and ball screw technologies, drawing on what the company describes as 80 years of experience, for designs that need precision mechanics at the same scale.
Global and UK presence
The group’s history lists production and sales companies in Germany, Switzerland, Hungary, Romania, the USA, China, Singapore, Malaysia, India and across Europe, including France, the Benelux, Poland, Austria, Italy and Denmark. It lists no UK subsidiary. UK engineers can contact FAULHABER through the online inquiry form, which asks for the enquirer’s country, or through the locations section of its website.
What to have ready for a FAULHABER enquiry
FAULHABER part numbers combine motor diameter, length, voltage and commutation type, and a drive is often a combination of motor, gearhead, encoder and controller. Give the complete part number of each item, the supply voltage, the operating point (speed and torque), the duty cycle and the ambient temperature. For battery-powered designs, add the allowable no-load and running current, since this often drives the choice between precious-metal and graphite commutation.
Sourcing FAULHABER parts through Specify Motion
Specify Motion is independent of FAULHABER and is not affiliated with it. We can help source FAULHABER micromotors, gearheads and controllers, or propose equivalents from our supply network that meet the same published figures.
