Who Deublin is

Deublin is an American manufacturer of rotary unions, the devices that carry a fluid (coolant, air, water, steam, thermal oil or hydraulic oil) from a stationary supply into a rotating shaft. It also makes slip rings, and increasingly combines the two in integrated assemblies. Deublin describes itself as a global leader in rotary union and slip ring technology and has been part of the HOERBIGER Group since 2019.

Machine tool builders know Deublin best for through-spindle coolant unions running at very high spindle speeds; engineers working with heated rolls and drying cylinders know it for steam joints and siphon systems on drying cylinders.

History and ownership

Deublin’s history page sets out its development:

  • 1945: Luke Deubler and Dick Linn found the company; its first product is a rotary union with balanced mechanical seals. Linn sells his shares a few years later, leaving Deubler as sole owner.
  • 1969: Deublin GmbH is set up in Germany, followed by Deublin Ltd. in England (1972) and Nippon Deublin in Japan (1977).
  • 1989: Deublin acquires SINT in Italy, a steam joint and siphon systems company.
  • 1992: the company moves into a 120,000 sq ft world headquarters in Waukegan, Illinois.
  • 1993: Luke Deubler dies and his son Donald L. Deubler becomes chairman.
  • 2019: the HOERBIGER Group, a Swiss-headquartered holding company, acquires Deublin, ending 74 years as a family-owned company.

Deublin has also bought Gardner Systems (Wisconsin), Diamond-Roltran, the Brazilian Jupiter rotary union brand and select LTN Servotechnik slip ring models. It now operates 13 entities worldwide.

Product portfolio

Deublin publishes few numeric ratings on its web pages, so our series records capture the figures it does give:

  • 1117 Series: a bearingless closed-seal coolant union for machine tool spindles running from 10,000 rpm up to 50,000 rpm.
  • 1109 Series: a coolant union with Pop-Off sealing, which can run dry without media pressure, in rotor-mounted and bore-mounted versions.
  • 2600 multi-passage series: unions with balanced mechanical seals carrying 2 to 8 separate media, such as coolant, dry air, cooling oil and hydraulic oil, for rotary tables and spindles; the 2606 is rated at 1,000+ rpm.
  • Type C steam joints: ferrous steam joints for 10 bar and up to 406 °F (about 208 °C), used with stationary or rotating siphons.
  • Through-bore slip rings: power rings with 35, 60 and 76 mm inner passages and optional carbon graphite brushes, signal and data rings with 1 in, 2 in and up to 300 mm bores, and 82 mm power-and-signal and precious-metal designs.

Deublin also makes air, water and thermal oil unions, integrated and custom slip rings, and complete steam and condensate systems.

Technologies and standards

Deublin’s named sealing technologies include balanced mechanical seals, Pop-Off seals that lift off when there is no media pressure (so the union can run dry), AutoSense seals that adjust to the medium, and SpindleShield protection for machine tool spindles. Its multi-passage unions keep media separate without cross-contamination. For a rotary union, the figures to agree with any supplier are media, pressure, speed, temperature, number of passages, port sizes, and whether the union may run dry. See our rotary union page and slip rings for mixers and process plant.

Industries served

Deublin’s product pages point mainly to machine tools (through-spindle coolant, rotary tables and clamping) and to heated and drying cylinders served by its steam joints and siphon systems, and its home page links a dedicated machine tools industry page. Its slip rings and integrated slip ring and union assemblies extend that to packaging, converting and other rotary machinery. See slip rings for packaging.

Points to check when comparing Deublin rotary unions

Rotary unions fail mainly at the seal faces, so the questions that matter are about the seal: can it run dry, what happens when coolant pressure is removed, and how it copes with minimum quantity lubrication or air. Check the maximum speed against your spindle’s real top speed, not its nominal rating, and confirm pressure and temperature for the actual medium. For multi-passage unions, agree which passages may run at the same time and at what pressures. For steam joints, the siphon type (stationary or rotating) is as important as the joint itself.

Global and UK presence

Deublin lists offices across the Americas, Europe and Asia, including the USA, Brazil, Germany, Austria, France, Italy, Poland, Spain, the UK, Singapore, South Korea, Japan and China. Deublin UK is at 6 Sopwith Park, Royce Close, West Portway, Andover SP10 3TS (+44 1264 333355, info-uk@deublin.com). The website also has a distributor locator.

What to send when specifying a Deublin rotary union or slip ring

For a union: media for each passage, pressure, flow, speed, temperature, whether it may run dry, mounting (rotor- or bore-mounted), thread or port sizes and any drawbar travel. For a slip ring: circuits with current and voltage, data needs, bore, speed and environment. For a replacement, quote the Deublin part number.

Specify Motion is independent of Deublin. Our engineers can help source Deublin products or propose equivalents from our supply network on published figures; see find a replacement or the slip rings hub.
