Who DaMiao is
DaMiao (达妙科技) is a Shenzhen company that makes integrated joint motors for robots. Its DM-J motors combine a brushless motor, driver electronics and two encoders in one unit, and report speed, position, torque and motor temperature over CAN. DaMiao’s own application cases include quadrupeds, wheel-legged robots, robot arms, humanoids and technology competitions.
For an OEM engineer, DaMiao sits at the low-cost, high-availability end of the joint actuator market. It suits prototypes and early production of dynamic robots more than heavy-duty industrial axes.
History and ownership
The legal entity is Shenzhen DaMiao Technology Co., Ltd. (深圳市达妙科技有限公司). Its company overview says it was founded in 2019 and, after several years of development and application testing, released the DM40, DM60, DM80 and DM100 drivers, the DM-J4310-2EC joint motor and its direct-drive motors. The site does not name shareholders, a parent company or a headcount.
Product portfolio
Joint motors
DaMiao’s product pages give rated and peak torque in text. The other parameters (voltage, ratio, speed, mass and dimensions) are published as images, so check those on the product page or with DaMiao before you design around them.
- The DM-J4310-2EC is the compact model, at 5.2 Nm rated and 18 Nm peak, with position mode and trapezoidal acceleration.
- The DM-J6216-2EC, in P and L versions, gives 10 Nm rated and 45 Nm peak, with CAN FD at up to 5 Mbps.
- The DM-J8009P-2EC is rated 20 Nm with 40 Nm peak, a lower peak-to-rated ratio than the others.
- The DM-J8520P-2EC is the largest, at 50 Nm rated and 176 Nm peak, with CAN FD and firmware upgrade over CAN.
Every model uses dual encoders, so the output shaft’s single-turn absolute position is known at power-up without a homing move. All of them have dual temperature protection and can be tuned through DaMiao’s PC software.
Drivers and other motors
DaMiao also sells the DM40, DM60, DM80 and DM100 motor drivers, harmonic joint motors, direct-drive and hub motors, gimbal motors and development kits, and it offers custom driver work. The DM-G8518 appears on the home page at 1.9 Nm rated and 8.78 Nm peak, without a category.
Technologies
Three features recur across the DM-J range:
- Dual encoders. One encoder on the motor and one on the output give absolute joint position after power loss within one output turn.
- CAN and CAN FD. The larger models support CAN FD at up to 5 Mbps. That helps when many joints share a bus at high update rates.
- Integrated drive. The motor and driver are one unit, so the robot’s wiring is reduced to DC power and the bus.
When comparing DM-J motors with harmonic actuators, remember that the peak figures here are short-duration ratings. Size on the continuous torque at the joint and on thermal limits. Our harmonic vs planetary vs cycloidal guide and how to select a harmonic actuator explain the trade-offs between low-ratio and high-ratio joints.
Industries served
DaMiao’s overview names robot dogs, robot arms, bionic robots and technology competitions. Its application cases also show biped, quadruped, wheel-legged and humanoid robots. This class of motor is best suited to mobile robots and light manipulators where weight and cost matter more than long service life at high duty. See robotics and cobots and AGVs and AMRs for how joint and wheel drives are specified for production.
Choosing between DM-J models
The ratio of peak to rated torque varies across the range: about 3.5:1 on the DM-J4310 and DM-J8520P, 4.5:1 on the DM-J6216 and 2:1 on the DM-J8009P. A high ratio means the motor can deliver short bursts well above what it can hold continuously. It suits a joint that mostly moves freely and occasionally takes impacts. A low ratio suggests more of the motor’s capacity is usable continuously.
As a worked example, take a quadruped knee that must hold 12 Nm continuously while standing and reach 35 Nm when landing. The DM-J6216 (10 Nm rated) would run above its rating while standing still, so the DM-J8009P (20 Nm rated, 40 Nm peak) is the better starting point. Confirm the speed and voltage figures on the product page before ordering.
Global and UK presence
DaMiao’s contact page lists only its Shenzhen office. No overseas subsidiaries or UK distributors are named. UK buyers usually reach DaMiao products through international online resellers. If you plan production volumes, ask about firmware version control, documentation in English, CE/UKCA paperwork and lead times before committing.
What to send when specifying a joint motor
Send the continuous and peak torque at the joint, the speed range, the duty cycle and supply voltage. Add the bus and update rate your controller uses, whether you need absolute output position, mass and envelope limits, backlash tolerance, and the environment (dust, water, temperature).
Specify Motion is independent of DaMiao and is not a distributor for the company. Our engineers can help source DaMiao products or propose equivalents from our supply network on published figures; see find a replacement or the servo and stepper motors hub.
