Describe the constraint that a catalogue product cannot meet
A custom enquiry is most useful when it explains the problem rather than only requesting a bespoke product. Perhaps a motor shaft is too long, a connector cannot fit the envelope, a slip ring needs a different mixture of circuits, or the thermal path limits continuous torque. Send the available drawing and identify the dimensions and functions that cannot change.
There are three possible levels: select an existing option, modify an established platform, or develop a new configuration. Tooling, minimum order quantities, development work and approval responsibilities can differ substantially between these routes. They must be confirmed before an engineering or purchasing commitment.
Modification topics to discuss
| Component | Requirements worth defining |
|---|---|
| Motor or frameless kit | Envelope, winding, shaft or mounting, feedback, brake and thermal path |
| Servo drive | Supply, current, feedback, packaging, environmental treatment and interfaces |
| Slip ring | Circuit schedule, power and data separation, bore, speed and sealing |
| Motion package | Mechanical adapters, cabling, mounting orientation and component interfaces |
These are discussion areas, not a statement that every catalogue range supports every modification. Motion Control Products publishes configurable and custom product support, while its AMC drive material describes modifications to established drive designs. Availability depends on the chosen product and manufacturer.
Give the operating conditions, not only the drawing
Explain the motion profile, temperature range, mounting material, cooling, vibration and service access. A shorter motor or smaller enclosure may alter heat dissipation. A new connector may affect sealing, EMC or cable routing. The design should be checked as an installed assembly rather than as an isolated component.
For slip rings, provide a circuit-by-circuit schedule and identify each data protocol. A spare electrical circuit is not automatically suitable for a high-speed communication channel. For frameless motors, use the integration checklist to record the bearing arrangement, rotor retention and feedback interface.
Establish the development and purchasing scope
Include prototype quantities, expected annual demand, required dates and the intended design life. Identify who owns the drawings, who approves samples and what test evidence is needed. Ask whether the quotation covers only supply or also design work, tooling and documentation.
A worked example can explain the choices but cannot prove that an unbuilt design will meet its duty. We use published manufacturer information and clearly identified assumptions to start the conversation. Exact capability, engineering support, pricing and delivery are confirmed for the proposed configuration.
Turn the requirement into an enquiry
Send the application, quantities and deadline, plus any existing model codes. We can discuss the original part, alternatives or a matched package. Compatibility, availability and supply arrangements are confirmed for the specific enquiry.
