Who ROBOTIS is
ROBOTIS is a South Korean robotics company founded in 1999 and best known for DYNAMIXEL, its family of smart servo actuators. A DYNAMIXEL unit packs a motor, reduction gearhead, controller, driver and absolute position sensor into one case. Units link to each other on a daisy-chained serial bus, so a robot arm or humanoid can be wired with one cable running from joint to joint, and the host addresses each servo on the bus individually.
That model has made DYNAMIXEL a standard actuator in university robotics, research humanoids, educational robots and, more recently, AI manipulation platforms. ROBOTIS now describes itself as making “actuators for physical AI”, and sells manipulators, robot hands, humanoid platforms and service robots built on its own actuators.
History and ownership
ROBOTIS’s US site says the company was founded in South Korea in 1999 and established its US subsidiary in 2009, and that its products are used in more than 50 countries. Today the group lists offices in Seoul, Corona (California), Beijing and Osaka. The pages we read do not give the Korean legal entity name, headcount or shareholding, so we have not stated them. The DYNAMIXEL e-manual has moved to docs.robotis.com, which holds the specifications and control tables for every model.
DYNAMIXEL portfolio
Our series records give the published e-manual figures.
X series
The DYNAMIXEL X Series is the core range, in sub-families XL and XC (small, low-voltage), XM and XH (mid-size, metal gears) and XD. All X models share a 4,096 pulse/rev (12-bit) absolute position sensor. Stall torque runs from 0.18 Nm (XL330-M077) to 12.9 Nm (XM540-W270 at 14.8 V). The XM540-W270, for example, has a 272.5:1 gear train, 10–14.8 V supply, TTL or RS-485 bus and DYNAMIXEL Protocol 2.0, and weighs 165 g. ROBOTIS notes that stall torque is a momentary maximum, not a continuous rating.
The XW Series is the waterproof version, rated IP68 (1 m, 24 h), with RS-485 and up to 11.2 Nm stall torque on the XW540-T260.
P series
The DYNAMIXEL-P Series (PH and PM) is the industrial-grade 24 V line, with maxon BLDC or coreless motors, output resolution up to 1,003,846 pulse/rev and RS-485 with DYNAMIXEL Protocol 2.0 or Modbus-RTU. The PH54-200-S500-R gives 44.7 Nm continuous torque through a 501.9:1 reduction at 33.1 rpm no-load.
Y series
The DYNAMIXEL-Y Series (YM070 and YM080) are hollow-shaft joint actuators with a frameless BLDC motor, integrated drive, optional electric brake and a 19-bit single-turn, 18-bit multi-turn absolute encoder. The YM080 at 99:1 gives 26 Nm continuous and 61.4 Nm peak at 24 V, with a 19 mm hollow shaft, backlash under 3 arcmin and a 1,920 N radial load rating. This puts the Y series closer to an industrial cobot joint than to a hobby servo.
Legacy and newest lines
ROBOTIS lists MX and AX as legacy series; the MX-106 gives 8.4 Nm at 12 V. The newest line is DYNAMIXEL-Q, which we have not yet added.
Technologies and standards
DYNAMIXEL’s defining feature is the bus: half-duplex TTL or RS-485 multidrop, at up to 4.5 Mbps on the XW540 and up to 10.5 Mbps on the YM080, using DYNAMIXEL Protocol 2.0 (Protocol 1.0 remains selectable on X models). The P series also supports Modbus-RTU. Because each actuator carries its own controller and driver, the host mainly sends goals and reads feedback. The trade-offs for a production machine are that the serial bus is not an industrial real-time fieldbus such as EtherCAT, and that ratings, especially X series stall torque, must be derated for continuous duty. Compare against the servo vs stepper guide and frameless motor sizing for robot joints when deciding.
Sizing a DYNAMIXEL for continuous duty
Because the X series headline figure is stall torque, a practical starting point is to keep the joint’s continuous load torque well below it and to check the performance graph in the e-manual at your supply voltage. Higher supply voltage within the published range raises both torque and speed (the XM540-W270 goes from 10.0 Nm at 11.1 V to 12.9 Nm at 14.8 V). The P and Y series publish continuous torque directly, which makes them easier to size for production.
Industries served
ROBOTIS’s own ecosystem covers education and research robots, AI manipulators (OMX, OMY), semi-humanoid and humanoid platforms, robot hands and indoor and outdoor service robots. For OEM use, typical candidates are research arms, grippers and automated test fixtures where a bus-connected servo saves wiring. See robotics and cobots.
Global and UK presence
ROBOTIS operates from Seoul with subsidiaries in the USA, China and Japan, and says it works with distributors and partners on every continent. Its contact page does not list a UK office, so UK buyers typically purchase through distributors or the ROBOTIS online stores.
What to send when specifying a smart servo
Give continuous and peak torque, speed, duty, supply voltage, bus (TTL, RS-485 or a fieldbus), feedback resolution, whether multi-turn absolute and a brake are needed, mass and envelope, and IP rating.
Specify Motion is independent of ROBOTIS. Our engineers can help source DYNAMIXEL actuators or propose equivalents from our supply network on published figures; see find a replacement or the servo and stepper motors hub.
