What a waterproof slip ring is

A waterproof slip ring is a rotary electrical joint sealed to keep water and moisture away from its rings and brushes, typically to an IP rating from IP65 to IP68. The housing uses rotating lip or mechanical seals at the shaft, sealed cable glands or connectors and corrosion-resistant materials such as stainless steel. Some designs are filled with oil or gel. Electrically they carry the usual mix of power, signal and data, but the sealing adds drag torque and limits speed.

When engineers choose a waterproof slip ring

Choose a waterproof slip ring for washdown machinery, outdoor equipment, fountains, marine deck use and anywhere spray, rain or immersion can reach the rotating joint. The trade-offs are drag torque, lower speed, seal wear and cost. Sealing must suit the actual exposure: pressure washdown needs a higher IP code than rain. For deep immersion, a pressure-compensated subsea design is more appropriate than a static seal alone.

How to specify the Waterproof Slip Ring

Send these with your enquiry and an engineer can confirm the right Waterproof Slip Ring variant:

  • Ingress protection required (IP code) and type of exposure
  • Immersion depth and duration if applicable (m)
  • Water quality: fresh, salt, chemicals or cleaning agents
  • Housing and seal materials
  • Circuits, current and voltage (A, V)
  • Speed (rpm)
  • Connectors or sealed glands and cable type

Common mistakes to avoid

  • Choosing IP67 for daily pressure washdown, where IP69K is more appropriate
  • Ignoring condensation inside when the unit cycles between hot and cold
  • Overlooking chemical attack on seals from cleaning agents
  • Expecting standard speed ratings once shaft seals are added

Waterproof Slip Ring: frequently asked questions

Can you help replace Waterproof Slip Ring or source the original?

Send the full model code, quantity and required date. Our engineers can check original-part availability and assess suitable alternatives, including supply-network options where appropriate. We confirm compatibility and any changes needed before recommending a replacement.

What is the Waterproof Slip Ring?

Sealed slip rings rated IP64 to IP68 for wet, washdown and marine settings such as ships and harbour equipment. Published series figures include circuits 44, current per circuit 85 A, voltage 1,100 V, speed 600 rpm. It is available through our supply network, and our engineers can confirm the right variant for your application.

Who makes the Waterproof Slip Ring?

The Waterproof Slip Ring is part of a range available through our supply network. Send us your requirement for pricing, lead time, datasheets and CAD.

What is the circuits of the Waterproof Slip Ring?

The published series maximum circuits is 44. Individual models and sizes in the Waterproof Slip Ring range vary, so check the exact variant against your duty cycle, mounting and environment, or ask our engineers to confirm the right size for you.

What IP rating does a waterproof slip ring need?

Match the IP code to the exposure. IP65 resists low-pressure water jets, IP67 resists temporary immersion and IP68 covers continuous immersion under stated conditions. For high-pressure, high-temperature cleaning, IP69K is the usual benchmark. Always state the actual conditions, including chemicals and temperature, because the IP code does not cover corrosion or condensation.

Does sealing affect slip ring performance?

Yes. Shaft seals add friction, so drag torque rises and the maximum speed is usually lower than for an unsealed unit. Seals also wear and may need replacing on a schedule. Consider whether the slip ring can sit in a protected position with less severe sealing, which often gives better life.
