Typical applications
What a brushed DC servo motor is
A brushed DC servo motor is a permanent-magnet DC motor with mechanical commutation through brushes and a commutator, designed for closed-loop servo duty. Torque is proportional to armature current and speed is proportional to voltage, which makes them simple to control with a linear or PWM drive. Many are fitted with a tachogenerator for speed feedback and an encoder for position. They were once the standard servo motor and are still used in legacy systems and some specialist applications.
When engineers choose a brushed DC servo motor
Choose a brushed DC servo when replacing or extending an existing system, when simple analogue drives are preferred, or when smooth low-speed torque and easy control matter more than maintenance. The trade-offs are brush wear, commutator maintenance, electrical noise and lower peak speed than brushless designs. For new designs with long life and low maintenance, a brushless servo is usually preferred.
How to specify the BDS Series DC Brushed Servomotors (82BDS, 102BDS)
Send these with your enquiry and an engineer can confirm the right BDS Series DC Brushed Servomotors (82BDS, 102BDS) variant:
- Continuous stall torque and peak torque (Nm)
- Rated speed (rpm) and voltage (V)
- Armature current, continuous and peak (A)
- Feedback: tachogenerator constant and encoder resolution
- Frame size and mounting (mm)
- Brush life and maintenance access
- Drive compatibility
Common mistakes to avoid
- Exceeding peak current and demagnetising the field magnets
- Ignoring brush wear in high-duty applications
- Leaving out EMC filtering for commutator noise
- Mismatching tachogenerator scaling with the drive
BDS Series DC Brushed Servomotors (82BDS, 102BDS): frequently asked questions
Can you help replace BDS Series DC Brushed Servomotors (82BDS, 102BDS) or source the original?
Send the full model code, quantity and required date. Our engineers can check original-part availability and assess suitable alternatives, including supply-network options where appropriate. We confirm compatibility and any changes needed before recommending a replacement.
What is the BDS Series DC Brushed Servomotors (82BDS, 102BDS)?
Brushed permanent-magnet DC servomotors in 82 mm and 102 mm frames with a 9.5 V/krpm tachogenerator on every model. Continuous stall torque runs 0.5-4.5 Nm with peaks to 22 Nm, and the motors work with most brushed servo drives on the market. Published series figures include rated torque 0.21 Nm, rated torque 4.3 Nm, peak torque 22 Nm, speed 5,000 rpm. It is available through our supply network, and our engineers can confirm the right variant for your application.
Who makes the BDS Series DC Brushed Servomotors (82BDS, 102BDS)?
The BDS Series DC Brushed Servomotors (82BDS, 102BDS) is part of a range available through our supply network. Send us your requirement for pricing, lead time, datasheets and CAD.
What is the rated torque of the BDS Series DC Brushed Servomotors (82BDS, 102BDS)?
The published series minimum rated torque is 0.21 Nm. Individual models and sizes in the BDS Series DC Brushed Servomotors (82BDS, 102BDS) range vary, so check the exact variant against your duty cycle, mounting and environment, or ask our engineers to confirm the right size for you.
Are brushed DC servo motors still used?
Yes, mainly for legacy system support, retrofits, and some applications that value simple analogue drives and smooth low-speed torque. For new designs, brushless servos are usually chosen for longer life and less maintenance. Brushed servos remain useful where control simplicity and low drive cost are priorities.
What does a tachogenerator do on a servo motor?
A tachogenerator produces a voltage proportional to speed, giving a simple analogue velocity feedback signal to the drive. Its constant, usually given in volts per thousand rpm, must match the drive's scaling. Many modern systems use encoders instead, but tachogenerators remain common on legacy brushed servos.
