Who Yaskawa is
YASKAWA Electric Corporation is a Japanese manufacturer of motion control, drives and robotics, headquartered in Kitakyushu on the island of Kyushu. Machine builders know it for the Sigma series of servomotors and SERVOPACK amplifiers, and Yaskawa Europe describes the group as one of the largest manufacturers of industrial robots, sold under the MOTOMAN name. In Europe the company organises its business into a Drives Motion Controls division (AC drives, servo drives, machine controllers, PLCs and HMIs) and a Robotics division. Sigma-7, Sigma-X, SERVOPACK and MOTOMAN are trademarks of their owner.
History and ownership
Daigorou Yasukawa established the company in Kurosaki, Kitakyushu, in 1915, and its first order product, a 20 HP three-phase induction motor, was delivered in 1917. Motion control came early: in 1958 Yaskawa invented the Minertia motor, which it describes as an early prototype of the servo motor. In 1972 it registered “MECHATRONICS” as a trademark, a word now used generically for the combination of mechanics and electronics.
The company completed the MOTOMAN-L10 in 1977, which it describes as the first all-electric robot system in Japan, and in 1979 launched the VS-626TV, which it calls the world’s first vector control drive. The Sigma (Σ) series of small AC servo drives went on sale in 1992 and has run through several generations since, up to today’s Sigma-7 and Sigma-X. In Europe, YASKAWA Europe Robotics in Slovenia began producing industrial robots in 2019.
YASKAWA Electric Corporation is a public company, listed on the Prime Market of the Tokyo Stock Exchange and on the Fukuoka Stock Exchange under securities code 6506. It reported 12,483 consolidated employees at 28 February 2026.
Motion portfolio
Rotary servomotors and amplifiers
The Sigma-X rotary servomotors are the current generation, with 26-bit encoders, from 50 W micro motors to 15 kW high-torque units. They pair with Sigma-X SERVOPACKs in single-, dual- and three-axis formats with EtherCAT or MECHATROLINK-4/III. The Sigma-7 rotary servomotors, with 24-bit encoders, and the Sigma-7 SERVOPACKs, with 3.1 kHz speed-loop bandwidth and a choice of MECHATROLINK-III, EtherCAT and PROFINET, remain widely installed.
Direct-drive and linear motors
For gearless rotary tables and indexers, Yaskawa offers the housed SGM7D, SGM7E and SGM7F direct-drive motors and the earlier SGMCS and SGMCV. Linear axes use the single-sided iron-core SGLF linear servomotors or the SGLT twin-magnet type, which cancels the magnetic attraction force for high-force axes. Our frameless and direct-drive motor hub covers how to choose between direct drive and a geared servo.
Machine controllers
The MP3300iec is an IEC 61131-3 machine controller programmed in MotionWorks IEC that coordinates Yaskawa servo axes over MECHATROLINK-III.
Technologies and standards
MECHATROLINK is the motion network that runs through Yaskawa’s own servo systems and controllers, such as the MP3300iec. Current SERVOPACKs are also offered with EtherCAT, and Sigma-7 with PROFINET, so they can work under other makers’ controllers. High-resolution absolute encoders (24-bit on Sigma-7, 26-bit on Sigma-X) and high speed-loop bandwidth are the published headline figures of each generation.
Industries served
Yaskawa’s European business serves robotics, motion control, controls and drive applications, and its UK subsidiary also supplies turnkey robotic systems and training. On the motion side, the UK site lists AC drives, servo motion control, PLCs and HMIs alongside MOTOMAN robots, and Yaskawa says it has more than 30 years of expertise in plant engineering for robotic systems.
Global and UK presence
Yaskawa Europe GmbH in Hattersheim am Main, near Frankfurt, is the regional headquarters for Europe, the Middle East and Africa. It reports about 2,000 employees in the region, five European production locations, offices in 21 EMEA countries and more than 100 channel partners.
In the UK, Yaskawa UK Ltd lists its headquarters at Hillthorn Business Park, Infiniti Drive, Washington NE37 3BR, and publishes 0330 678 1990. For servo and drive products, the Drives Motion & Controls team uses salesuk@yaskawa.eu for sales and support.uk@yaskawa.eu for technical support and spares. The UK website also links to local partners, so UK OEMs can buy direct or through a partner.
What to have ready for a Yaskawa enquiry
Yaskawa model numbers carry most of what a supplier needs. Quote the full servomotor code (for example an SGM7J or SGMXA type, which encodes output, voltage, encoder, shaft and brake options) and the full SERVOPACK code, which identifies the interface (MECHATROLINK, EtherCAT, PROFINET or analogue/pulse) and the number of axes. Add the controller in use, the supply voltage and whether the encoder is absolute with a battery. For direct-drive or linear motors, give the magnet track length and the encoder or scale fitted.
Sourcing Yaskawa parts through Specify Motion
Specify Motion is independent of Yaskawa and is not affiliated with it. We can help source Sigma-series motors and SERVOPACKs for an installed machine, or propose servo motors and drives from our supply network that meet the same published figures. Our Yaskawa alternatives page explains what to check, and find a replacement takes a model number.
