Who Galil is
Galil Motion Control is a Californian company that designs and makes precision motion controllers and programmable I/O controllers. It credits itself with introducing the first microprocessor-based motion controller in 1983, the year it was founded, and reports more than one million controllers deployed in medical, aerospace, semiconductor and defence applications.
Galil’s controllers use a compact command language, run programs on the controller itself in up to eight threads, and can carry built-in amplifiers so a single unit both controls and drives several motors. It offers direct application engineering support and will customise controllers for OEMs, including dimensions, temperature ranges and firmware.
History and ownership
Jacob Tal and Wayne Baron founded Galil in 1983. Tal served as President for the first 20 years, and Baron, formerly a robotics manager at Hewlett-Packard’s central research laboratory, led product design and development as VP of Engineering. In July 2004 Baron became President and Tal chairman of the board. The company’s history page also tracks its applications and engineering team, with vice presidents for applications, operations and R&D appointed in 2012.
Galil’s website does not name a parent company. It cites more than 110 consecutive profitable quarters and more than 40 years of operation.
Motion controllers
Ethernet multi-axis controllers
The DMC-4000 is Galil’s best-selling performance controller for 1 to 8 axes. Servo update time is 62 µs for one or two axes, rising to 187.5 µs for eight, with a 22 MHz encoder rate and support for quadrature, BiSS, SSI and sin/cos feedback. It drives stepper, brushed and brushless servo, piezo, voice coil, galvanometer and hydraulic actuators, either through external amplifiers or plug-in internal amplifiers from 20 W linear types to the 1,200 W D3740 sinusoidal drive. It runs from 20–80 V DC with internal amplifiers. The DMC-4103 is the economy version, with 125 µs update for two axes and a 15 MHz encoder rate, sharing the same amplifier options.
Single-axis controller
The DMC-30000 is a single-axis Ethernet and RS-232 controller with a 125 µs minimum servo update and 15 MHz encoder rate. It can include an 800 W sinusoidal drive, a 20 W linear drive, a 1.4 A stepper drive or a 6 A microstepping / 800 W servo drive.
EtherCAT controllers
For networked axes, the DMC-52000 is an EtherCAT master for up to 32 axes at a 1 ms cycle. It works with Galil’s EDD-37010 smart drive and with EtherCAT drives from a list of other makers that Galil publishes, including AMC, Copley, Delta, Panasonic, Parker and Yaskawa, with others to be confirmed. The DMC-50000 is a hybrid that combines up to four local axes with Galil amplifiers and EtherCAT axes at 1 kHz. Our motion controllers hub explains centralised versus networked architectures.
Galil also sells PCI-card controllers (DMC-1806 and DMC-1802) and backwards-compatible models (DMC-4200, DMC-2105) that replace older DMC-2000 and DMC-2103 controllers, which helps when upgrading an existing machine without rewriting its program.
Programmable I/O controllers
The RIO family are small programmable controllers that use the same command language. The RIO-47100 packs 16 opto-isolated inputs, 8 outputs, 8 analogue inputs and 8 analogue outputs into a 3.88 x 4.2 x 1.10 inch metal enclosure, runs from 18–36 V DC or Power over Ethernet and supports PID loops. The RIO-47200 and RIO-47300 are DIN-rail versions, the latter with dual Ethernet, and the RIO-57400 is an EtherCAT remote I/O slave.
Technologies and software
Galil’s GDK software handles set-up and tuning, and its gclib API lets host applications on PCs talk to controllers over Ethernet. Program memory on the DMC-4000 holds 4,000 lines of 80 characters, 24,000 array elements and 510 variables, which is enough for most machine sequences to run on the controller rather than on a PC.
When specifying a Galil system, the key choices are axis count, whether amplifiers sit inside the controller or on an EtherCAT network, the motor and feedback types on each axis, and the supply: the internal-amplifier controllers run from a 20–80 V DC bus, so higher-voltage AC servo axes need external drives.
Industries served
Galil names medical, aerospace, semiconductor and defence applications. Its multi-technology amplifier options, including piezo, voice coil and galvanometer drives, suit laboratory automation, optics and test equipment as well as conventional servo axes. Our medical and laboratory and semiconductor and electronics pages cover typical requirements.
Global and UK presence
Galil operates from Rocklin, California, and its contact page lists no UK or European office or distributor. UK customers can deal with Galil directly by phone or email, and Galil offers direct application engineering support.
Sourcing Galil parts through Specify Motion
Specify Motion is independent of Galil Motion Control and is not affiliated with it. We can help you source Galil controllers for an existing machine, or propose equivalent controllers and drives from our supply network on published figures where a second source makes sense. The find a replacement form is the quickest way to send us a part number or nameplate.
