Who Bosch Rexroth is
Bosch Rexroth is the drive and control company of the Bosch Group. It supplies hydraulics, electric drives and controls, and linear motion technology to machine builders and to makers of mobile machines, and it describes its sales partner network as covering more than 80 countries. Its head office is in Lohr am Main, Germany.
For motion engineers, Bosch Rexroth is known for two things: its electric drive and control systems, now built around the ctrlX AUTOMATION platform, and its linear motion technology, from ball and planetary screw assemblies to complete linear and compact modules and electromechanical cylinders that replace hydraulic cylinders. This profile concentrates on servo drives, servo motors, controllers and linear actuators.
History and ownership
Bosch’s own history of the company dates it to 1795, when the Rexroth family took over an iron forge in the Elsava valley in the Spessart hills. In 1850 Georg Ludwig Rexroth bought an iron foundry in Lohr am Main, the town that is still the company’s home. Rexroth’s history page describes a move into hydraulics in the 1950s, which made it a leading hydraulics supplier, and the addition of electric drives and controls and linear and assembly technology between 1965 and 1995.
Ownership changed in two steps. The Mannesmann group took a 50 percent stake in 1968 and bought the remaining shares from the founding family in 1975. On 1 May 2001, Bosch Rexroth AG was launched by merging Bosch Automation Technology with Mannesmann Rexroth, bringing hydraulic, electric and linear drive technology under one brand. The company is part of the Bosch Group, whose parent is Robert Bosch GmbH. Bosch Rexroth AG is registered in Stuttgart under HRB 23192.
Motion portfolio
Servo drives
ctrlX DRIVE spans 50 W to 100 kW. The modular IP20 ctrlX DRIVE system combines converters, single- and double-axis inverters and supply units on 200 to 500 V AC, with peak currents from 6 A to 375 A and regenerative supply units up to 100 kW. For small machines, the compact ctrlX DRIVE converters run from 50 W to 5 kW with up to 55 A peak. The cabinet-free ctrlX DRIVE (XMS2 and XMD2) mounts on the machine at IP65/IP67, fed from a DC bus up to 750 V. All versions share Sercos III and EtherCAT, a 62.5 µs current loop, STO as standard and optional SafeMotion.
Servo motors
The MS2N servo motors cover seven sizes with maximum torque from 3.7 to 692 Nm, speeds up to 9,000 rpm and self-cooled, fan-cooled or water-cooled options. The MS2E motors are ATEX-certified for zone 2 and zone 22, up to 266 Nm, and the MS2S motors are compact single-cable motors up to 22.6 Nm for standard tasks.
Controllers
ctrlX CORE is a Linux-based control platform running ctrlX OS, extended by apps for PLC (IEC 61131), motion, high-level languages and visualisation. Hardware runs from the ARM-based CORE X3 to the Intel Core i7 COREplus X7, all with an EtherCAT master. See our motion controller hub.
Linear actuators
The EMC-HP electromechanical cylinder uses a planetary screw drive to deliver up to 250 kN, 1,500 mm stroke and 0.83 m/s, IP54, and is aimed at jobs traditionally done by hydraulic cylinders. Standard EMC cylinders, linear and compact modules and ball and planetary screw assemblies are configured online. Our guides to replacing hydraulics with electric actuators and ball screw vs roller screw explain the trade-offs.
Technologies and standards
ctrlX AUTOMATION is designed as an open platform: ctrlX OS is based on Ubuntu Core, functions are installed as apps, and the company maintains public documentation and a GitHub community. The drives support both Sercos III and EtherCAT on the same hardware. MS2N encoders are offered for safety functions up to SIL 3, and the MS2E motors carry ATEX device group II, category 3 certification. Bosch Rexroth claims ctrlX AUTOMATION can cut component and engineering costs by 30 to 50 percent; that is a manufacturer claim rather than an independent figure.
Industries served
The product pages point to machine tools, presses and forming, packaging, printing, handling and assembly, with MS2E motors for hazardous areas. The Smart Function Kit for pressing is a ready-made mechatronic press subsystem, and Bosch Rexroth cites its use in washing machine production. See our packaging and food and robotics pages.
Global and UK presence
Bosch Rexroth Limited is the UK company, registered office 15 Cromwell Road, St Neots, Cambridgeshire PE19 2ES, telephone +44 1480 223200, email sales@boschrexroth.co.uk. For electric drives and controls, the UK pages also give 0345 604 4106 for sales and 0800 169 6624 (service@boschrexroth.co.uk) for service.
