Who WAGO is
WAGO is a German company best known for spring pressure electrical connection technology, starting with the rail-mount terminal block. Alongside connection products it makes interface electronics and automation technology, and it is in automation that WAGO matters to motion and machine engineers. Its I/O System 750 has been on the market since 1995, and its PFC and CC100 controllers run CODESYS for machine and process control.
This profile concentrates on WAGO’s I/O systems and controllers. On a motion project, that hardware typically sits around the servo axes: distributed I/O for sensors and actuators, a PLC that sequences the machine, or a controller that talks to servo drives over a fieldbus.
History and ownership
The company traces its origins to 1950, when brothers-in-law Heinrich Nagel and Friedrich Hohorst learned of a patent for a screwless leaf-spring terminal block. They bought the patent rights and founded WAGO Klemmenwerk GmbH in Minden on 27 April 1951. The first rail-mount terminal blocks with spring clamp connection for standard DIN rails followed in 1957, and WAGO went on to introduce CAGE CLAMP spring connection.
International expansion included WAGO UK and WAGO Japan in 1990 and a production site in Sondershausen from 1991. In 1993 WAGO and Beckhoff jointly developed a modular, fieldbus-independent I/O system, and at the 1995 Hanover Fair WAGO launched its 750 Series, which it describes as the world’s first modular I/O system with couplers for different fieldbus technologies.
WAGO remains family-owned and headquartered in Minden. The operating company is WAGO GmbH & Co. KG at Hansastraße 27.
Automation products
I/O systems
The WAGO I/O System 750/753 is fieldbus-independent: the same DIN-rail I/O modules, wired with CAGE CLAMP connections, sit behind a coupler for the chosen network or behind a WAGO controller. WAGO lists more than 500 modules, including functional safety and Ex i modules. The 750 XTR range, with the PFC200 XTR controller, is rated -40 to +70 °C without extra protection, vibration-proof to 5 g, isolated to 5 kV impulse voltage and approved to 5,000 m altitude, for energy, rail and marine equipment. I/O System Field 765 adds IP67 machine-mounted I/O with IO-Link.
Controllers
The PFC200 is a Linux-based PLC with a 1 GHz Cortex-A8, 512 MB RAM, two Ethernet ports and RS-232/485, programmed in CODESYS V2 or the CODESYS V3-based e!RUNTIME, and also in C/C++. It has a built-in firewall and VPN and supports all 750/753 modules. The PFC300 moves up to a 64-bit dual-core Cortex-A53 at 1.4 GHz with 2 GB DDR4, 32 GB eMMC, two gigabit Ethernet ports and CODESYS V3.5, with Docker support. The Compact Controller 100 puts 8 digital inputs, 4 digital outputs, 2 analogue inputs, 2 analogue outputs and 2 RTD inputs into a compact DIN-rail housing, again programmed in CODESYS V3. PFC100 and Edge Controller models complete the range.
See our motion controllers hub for how a PLC and a dedicated motion controller divide the work on a machine.
Choosing between WAGO controllers
For a small machine with a handful of signals, the CC100’s integrated I/O avoids a separate rack, and 750 couplers extend it later. When the machine needs many I/O points, telecontrol protocols or a mature installed base, the PFC200 with 750 modules is the usual starting point. The PFC300 suits applications that need more processing, memory and gigabit networking, such as data logging, containerised software or heavier visualisation. Where ambient temperature, vibration or altitude are extreme, specify the XTR versions from the outset rather than adding cabinet heating or cooling later.
Technologies and standards
WAGO’s automation range is built around open standards: IEC 61131-3 programming in CODESYS, Linux as the controller operating system, and fieldbus independence in the I/O system. Its PFC controllers also support telecontrol protocols such as IEC 60870-5-101/103/104, IEC 61850 and DNP3, which suits energy and utility installations as well as machines.
Industries served
WAGO’s XTR range is built for extreme ambient conditions and has been through marine approval testing, and its telecontrol protocols address energy and utility assets. For motion engineers, the typical use is distributed I/O and machine sequencing alongside servo axes in packaging and handling equipment; see our packaging and food page.
Global and UK presence
WAGO operates worldwide from Minden. In the UK, WAGO Limited is at Unit 1, Handley Road, Houlton, Rugby CV23 1GA, registered under company number 2495884, with a sales phone line and uksales@wago.com. UK engineers can contact WAGO Limited directly for sales and support.
Sourcing WAGO parts through Specify Motion
Specify Motion is independent of WAGO and is not affiliated with it. We can help you source WAGO I/O and controllers alongside the motion components of a machine, or propose equivalent parts from our supply network on published figures where a second source makes sense. The find a replacement form is the quickest way to send us a part number or nameplate.
