Who Mitsubishi Electric is

Mitsubishi Electric Corporation is one of Japan’s largest electrical and electronics manufacturers, with businesses ranging from air conditioning, building systems and power systems to semiconductors, automotive equipment and factory automation. It was established on 15 January 1921 and reported 150,386 employees at 31 March 2026.

For machine builders, the relevant part is the factory automation (FA) business, which makes programmable controllers (MELSEC), servo systems (MELSERVO), motion controllers, inverters (FREQROL), CNCs, industrial robots and laser and EDM machines. This profile concentrates on servo motors, servo drives and motion controllers, the parts covered by our site.

History and ownership

Mitsubishi Electric’s corporate history describes the wider Mitsubishi group as dating back to the first Mitsubishi company launched by Yataro Iwasaki in 1870, with Mitsubishi Electric itself established in 1921. Its early products included electric fans and elevators, and in the 1980s its shares were listed on the London and Paris stock exchanges. The company marked its 100th anniversary in 2021 and revised its corporate philosophy at the same time.

Mitsubishi Electric Corporation is owned by its shareholders and is not part of a larger parent. In Europe, factory automation is run by Mitsubishi Electric Europe B.V., which has been represented in Germany since 1978 and is a wholly owned subsidiary of the Japanese parent. Its EMEA FA headquarters is in Ratingen, near Düsseldorf, and it manages sales, service and support through local branches and distributors.

Servo and motion portfolio

Servo amplifiers

The current platform is MELSERVO-J5. The MR-J5 servo amplifiers span 50 W to 22 kW on 200 V or 400 V, with a speed frequency response of 3.5 kHz and versions for different networks: MR-J5-G on CC-Link IE TSN, MR-J5-G-N1 on EtherCAT (with Safety over EtherCAT), MR-J5-B on the SSCNET III/H optical network and MR-J5-A for pulse-train and analogue control. Safety functions include STO, SS1, SBC, SLS, SS2 and SOS. For multi-axis machines, the MR-J5D drive units hold one, two or three axes on a common DC link fed by an MR-CV regenerative converter.

Servo motors

The HK servo motors run from 50 W to 22 kW across ultra-low inertia (HK-MT, up to 10,000 rpm, and HK-RT), low inertia (HK-KT), medium inertia (HK-ST) and heavy-duty (HK-JT) series. All use a 26-bit batteryless absolute encoder, equal to 67,108,864 pulses per revolution. The MELSERVO-J5 family also includes LM-series linear servo motors and TM-series direct-drive motors. For linear axes, the catalogue lists the LM-AJ iron-core range with continuous force from 70 to 450 N and the LM-AU ironless range from 30 to 350 N, and TM-RFM and TM-RG2M direct-drive motors give gearless indexing tables up to 4,000,000 pulses per revolution. Our servo vs stepper guide and absolute vs incremental encoders guide explain how these choices affect a machine.

Motion controllers

On the MELSEC iQ-R platform, motion control comes either from a motion CPU or from a motion module. The iQ-R motion CPUs (R16MTCPU, R32MTCPU and R64MTCPU) handle up to 64 axes beside a PLC CPU. The RD78G and RD78GH motion modules control up to 256 axes over CC-Link IE TSN, with minimum operation cycles of 62.5 µs and 31.25 µs respectively, and support positioning, synchronous and cam control programmed in GX Works3. Simple Motion modules serve smaller MELSEC iQ-F and iQ-R systems, and PC-based motion is offered through SWM-G software for up to 128 axes.

Technologies and standards

Mitsubishi Electric’s motion strategy centres on CC-Link IE TSN, a gigabit Ethernet network that uses time-sensitive networking to carry motion and general data on the same cable, while still offering EtherCAT and its own SSCNET III/H optical network. MELSERVO-J5 amplifiers are designed for ambient temperatures up to 60 °C, and the HK motors’ batteryless 26-bit encoders remove backup batteries from absolute systems.

Industries served

Mitsubishi Electric’s FA business addresses general machine building, packaging, electronics and semiconductor assembly, automotive and material handling. Servo users commonly include semiconductor and electronics equipment and packaging and food machinery.

Global and UK presence

In the UK, Mitsubishi Electric Europe B.V. has a UK Branch with its Hatfield Office at Travellers Lane, Hatfield, Hertfordshire AL10 8XB, telephone +44 1707 276100. Factory automation enquiries go through the UK FA website’s enquiry form and technical support pages, and the site lists Approved Solutions Partners. The EMEA FA headquarters in Ratingen publishes +49 2102 486-0. UK engineers typically buy through the FA organisation’s partners and distributors, and the UK site also offers training courses, a product shop, a selection tool and downloadable catalogues, manuals and CAD data.
