Who maxon is
maxon is a Swiss manufacturer of precision drive systems, based in Sachseln in the canton of Obwalden. It is known above all for small, efficient DC motors with ironless windings, and today supplies complete drive units: brushed and brushless motors, gearheads, encoders and controllers, often configured online to a customer’s specification. Its motors are found in medical devices, robots and exoskeletons and on several Mars rovers. maxon is a trademark of its owner.
The group says it has around 3,200 employees, 41 locations and eight global production locations where it makes the essential components of its drive systems.
History and ownership
The company was founded on 5 December 1961 as Interelectric AG, a production site in Sachseln for Braun, the electrical company based in Frankfurt. In 1963 it began producing galvanoplastic parts, mainly shaver foils for Braun, and set up a development department for electromechanical devices.
The turning point came in 1968 and 1969 with DC motors using an ironless rotor. maxon says the absence of iron in the rotor almost doubles efficiency compared with traditional motors; the winding and its manufacturing process were patented and maxon was registered as a trademark. The first subsidiary, maxon motor GmbH in Munich, followed in 1979, a gearhead plant in Sexau, Germany, in 1989, and a plant in Veszprém, Hungary, in 2004. Interelectric became maxon motor ag in 1999.
Space work built the brand’s reputation: NASA’s Sojourner, the first rover to land on Mars in 1997, carried eleven maxon DC motors; Spirit and Opportunity each used 35 in 2004; and Perseverance carried several maxon drives in 2021. In 2018 maxon acquired Parvalux Electric Motors Ltd. in the UK, and in 2019 it opened its first US production site in Taunton, Massachusetts, and rebranded simply as maxon.
maxon describes itself as privately held and independent. Its imprint names maxon international ltd., registered in Obwalden, as the operating company.
Product portfolio
Brushed DC motors
The DCX is the configurable ironless brushed DC motor, with precious-metal or graphite brushes, ordered online with matching gearheads and encoders. The classic RE range continues in the large RE 50 and RE 65 sizes.
Brushless DC motors
The EC-i is a slotted iron-core internal-rotor motor for high torque and dynamics at low voltage. The EC-max is an economical ironless brushless type in small diameters, and the EC flat and ECX FLAT are short outer-rotor motors for tight axial spaces. For robot joints and exoskeletons there are EC frameless DT and HT kits. Our servo and stepper motor hub explains how ironless and slotted designs compare.
Gearheads, encoders and controllers
GPX planetary gearheads run from 4 mm to 70 mm diameter, with ceramic and ultra-performance versions. ENX encoders cover optical, magnetic and inductive principles, incremental and absolute. Control comes from the EPOS4 positioning controllers with CANopen or EtherCAT, the ESCON servo controllers and the newer ESCON2. The IDX combines an IP65 brushless motor and an EPOS4 controller in one housing.
Technologies and standards
The ironless winding is maxon’s defining technology. With no iron in the rotor there is no cogging and very low rotor inertia, which gives smooth low-speed running and fast acceleration, and the high efficiency suits battery-powered devices. maxon also emphasises configurability: its online configurator, launched in 2012 for the maxon X drives, lets engineers combine motor, gearhead and encoder and receive a single part number. Our gearbox hub and encoder hub cover how to specify the matching parts.
Industries served
maxon’s own history highlights medical technology (it set up a Medical unit in 2007), robotics (partnerships on drone and inspection robot drives in 2020 and sponsorship of the first Cybathlon in 2016), e-bikes (from 2015) and space exploration.
Global and UK presence
maxon lists local and global offices on its contact page. The UK company is maxon motor uk ltd, at Maxon House, Hogwood Lane, Finchampstead, Berkshire RG40 4QW, telephone +44 (0)1189 733337 and email sales.uk@maxongroup.com. UK engineers can order through this office or use the online configurator. The group’s UK footprint also includes Parvalux Electric Motors, which it acquired in 2018.
What to have ready for a maxon enquiry
maxon drives are usually a combination of motor, gearhead and encoder, so give the part number of each item, or the single configured part number if the drive was built in the online configurator. Add the supply voltage, the operating point (speed and torque at the output), the duty cycle and the controller used. For medical or space-related builds, note any cleaning, sterilisation or traceability requirement, as these narrow the choice considerably.
Sourcing maxon parts through Specify Motion
Specify Motion is independent of maxon and is not affiliated with it. We can help you source maxon parts for an existing design, or propose DC motors, gearheads and controllers from our supply network that meet the same published figures. Our maxon alternatives page explains what to check, and find a replacement takes a part number.
