Who BGB is

BGB is a British manufacturer of rotary transfer products: slip rings, complete slip ring assemblies, fibre optic rotary joints (FORJs) and hydraulic rotary unions. It is based in Grantham, Lincolnshire, with a second manufacturing plant in Virginia, USA. Engineers in renewable energy know BGB best for wind turbine slip rings: the company says it has sold more than 1,000,000 rotary solutions into the wind industry and describes itself as the market leader in rotary solutions for renewable energy, primarily wind.

For UK OEMs, BGB is one of the few slip ring makers that designs and builds in Britain, which matters when a project wants a local partner for custom assemblies, repairs or refurbishment of existing units.

History and ownership

BGB’s history page tells the story of a family business:

  • 1976: founded by three work colleagues; the name comes from the initials of their wives, Beryl, Geraldine and Barbara. The business began making carbon brush holders.
  • Late 1970s: the partnership shrinks to two, Gordon and David, working from a makeshift workshop in Leicestershire.
  • 1980s: after renting space in Grantham, they take over a former shoe factory on Dysart Road, still the main site. The partnership dissolves, leaving David Holt Snr as sole owner, and slip ring production begins.
  • 1990s: the first packaged slip ring assembly for the wastewater industry, and the first wind-specific pitch control slip ring, supplied to turbine makers through a Danish agent.
  • 2009: the Dysart Road expansion is completed and BGB wins the Queen’s Award for Export. The FORJ is developed in the same decade.
  • 2012: BGB Technology Inc. is formed in Richmond, Virginia, to serve the Americas.
  • 2013: entry into induction power transfer, with a lighting system for luxury yachts.
  • 2017: a second Grantham site opens for R&D, testing and commercial staff.
  • 2019: under David Holt Jnr, all divisions are brought together under the single BGB brand.

BGB marks its 50th year in June 2026. Its website does not give a legal entity name, headcount or current shareholding, so we have not stated them.

Product portfolio

Our series records summarise what BGB publishes for each line. BGB publishes few numeric ratings, because much of its work is built to order.

  • Wind turbine slip rings: hub and pitch control power and signal assemblies (for example 10/11, 14 and 35-way units) and 3-way power slip rings, new and as aftermarket replacements for widely used turbine platforms. BGB also offers through-bore, pancake, high-current, capsule and fibre optic types for wind.
  • Modular and barrel slip ring assemblies: packaged units for slow to medium speeds, with modular types carrying power up to 30 A plus signals, built with mounting, termination and sealing for wastewater and industrial plant.
  • Pancake slip rings: flat face-type rings where axial length is limited, including 3-way and 17-way catalogue parts, for robotics, aerospace, marine and revolving doors.
  • FJ1 FORJ: a stainless steel fibre optic rotary joint, single-channel multimode as standard with single-mode and multi-channel (FJ2, FJ3) on request. It is sealed to IP68, tested to military vibration standards and offered with ST, SC, LC or FC connectors. Miniature, L-type and wavelength-division variants are also listed.
  • Rotary unions: hydraulic unions with a four-port flagship design and custom builds, often combined with a slip ring or FORJ in one package for cranes, excavators and wind turbine pitch systems.

BGB also makes brush holders, aftermarket wind brushes, lightning protection systems and condition-monitoring upgrades, and runs a slip ring repair and refurbishment service.

Technologies and standards

BGB’s strengths are custom electromechanical design, combined slip ring, FORJ and rotary union packages, and lifecycle service. It tests FORJs to EN 2591-601 for optical insertion loss, and uses in-house and UKAS-accredited facilities for vibration testing. For guidance on specifying a ring of this kind, see how to specify a slip ring, our pages on slip rings for wind turbines and fibre optic rotary joints, and the rotary union type page.

Industries served

BGB lists wind and renewable energy, wastewater and utilities, construction plant, rail, shipping and EV charging, industrial machinery, media and film, simulators, and aerospace applications such as drones, ROVs and radar. Its primary European export markets are Scandinavia, Spain and Germany.

Global and UK presence

BGB runs two sites in Grantham, one on Dysart Road and one at Turnpike Close, plus the US plant at Colonial Heights, Virginia. It exports to more than 77 countries, with exports making up over 90 % of turnover, and lists distribution partners on its website. UK engineers can deal with the Grantham team directly.

What to send when specifying a BGB slip ring

Give the number of power and signal circuits with current and voltage for each, any data bus or fibre count, bore and envelope, speed, environment (temperature, IP, vibration), expected life, and any hydraulic or pneumatic passages. For a replacement, the existing part number or turbine platform helps.

Specify Motion is independent of BGB. Our engineers can help source BGB products or propose equivalents from our supply network on published figures; see find a replacement or the slip rings hub.
