Who Baumüller is
Baumüller is a German maker of electric drive and automation systems for machinery, vehicles and ships. It has concentrated on electric drive technology since 1930 and supplies servo drives, converters, servo and torque motors, main drive motors and motion controllers, with services that run from engineering and commissioning to predictive maintenance.
Its range is weighted towards higher-power servo and direct-drive technology: servo drives up to 315 kW with integrated safety options, liquid-cooled servo motors and very large torque motors, used for example in extruders and on ships.
History and ownership
Heinrich Baumüller founded the company in Nuremberg in 1930 as a repair business for electric motors. Own three-phase motor production started in 1945, DC motors in 1960 and converter electronics in 1970. Three-phase servo motors and transistor converters followed in 1985, and Baumüller describes itself as a pioneer of direct drive technology from 1991.
The b maXX controller and converter generation arrived in 2001 and the DST synchronous motor series in 2002. Expansion abroad began with a branch in Hartford, USA, in 1987, and has since added India, Wujiang in China, Mexico, plants in Brno and Skalice nad Svitavou in the Czech Republic, and Slovenia. The industrial assembly company Nürmont joined the group in 2005.
Baumüller remains a family-run company. Its imprint names Andreas Baumüller as CEO of Baumüller Nürnberg GmbH, alongside a CFO and COO, and gives the registration as HRB 589 at the Nuremberg district court.
Servo drives
The b maXX 5300 is the main servo platform: single- and double-axis units for 207–528 V AC mains, from 1.6 to 100 kW, with nominal currents from 3 to 180 A and peaks up to 420 A. Three safety modules scale from STO alone to a full set of safe motion functions including SLS, SBC, SLP and SCA, specified to SIL 3 and PL e and selectable over EtherCAT FSoE. Cooling options are air, push-through water and cold plate, and a single-cable connection to Baumüller motors removes the separate feedback cable.
The b maXX 5500 covers high power: mono units from 1.1 kW to 315 kW, rated currents up to 615 A and peaks to 800 A in seven sizes, with stainless-steel water cooling available. For smaller machines, the b maXX 3300 is a compact servo controller up to about 5 kW on 230 V single-phase or 400 V three-phase, with onboard EtherCAT and CANopen, resolver, EnDat, SSI, sin/cos and HIPERFACE DSL feedback, and certified STO to PL e. Our servo drives hub explains drive sizing against peak and RMS current.
Motors
The DSD2, DSC1, DSP1 and DSH1 servo motors share seven sizes from 28 to 132 and start at 0.3 kW. DSD2 is the dynamic, wide-speed-range model, DSC1 the compact one, DSP1 the high-speed model and DSH1 the low-cogging model. They can be uncooled, air-cooled or liquid-cooled, with water cooling standard from size 45 upwards, and take resolvers, SICK or HEIDENHAIN encoders or HIPERFACE DSL.
The DST2 high-torque motors are housed synchronous direct drives in five sizes from 135 to 400, with nominal torque up to 18,600 Nm, peak torque up to 31,600 Nm and power up to 530 kW. They are water- or oil-cooled to IP54. Sizes 315 and 400 gained Lloyd’s Register certification for shipbuilding in 2015. Our frameless torque motors hub compares housed direct drives with frameless kits.
Motion control and engineering
The b maXX PLC mc is a 110 x 90 x 35 mm DIN-rail controller with an Intel Atom multicore CPU, EtherCAT master, gigabit Ethernet, HDMI and OPC UA and MQTT connectivity. It runs a real-time operating system for IEC 61131-3 motion and coordinated motion, alongside Windows 10 IoT for visualisation. Baumüller’s ProMaster framework handles engineering, and its sizemaXX software, developed in 2006, sizes drives. See our motion controllers hub.
Industries served
Baumüller’s product pages name extruders and plastics machinery for the b maXX 5500, shipbuilding for the DST2, and machinery, vehicles and ships in general. Its electromobility work dates back to the powerMELA drive concept of 2003 and a hybrid concept for commercial vehicles in 2010, and Baumüller DS servo motors powered a solar catamaran on its round-the-world voyage in 2011. For retrofit work, the group’s service arm also modernises older drive installations, which matters on long-life machinery where an original drive generation is no longer built.
Global and UK presence
Baumüller operates from Nuremberg with production in Germany, the Czech Republic and China and branches worldwide. In the UK, Baumüller UK Ltd, part of Baumüller Services, provides installation, commissioning, repair, modernisation and spare parts, reachable on +44 161 432 7824.
Sourcing Baumüller parts through Specify Motion
Specify Motion is independent of Baumüller and is not affiliated with it. We can help you source Baumüller drives and motors for an existing machine, or propose equivalent parts from our supply network on published figures where a second source makes sense. The find a replacement form is the quickest way to send us a part number or nameplate.
